The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees offers assistance and protection to refugees around the world. UNHCR is one of the largest refugee agencies, with a staff of over 9300 employees in 125 countries who help millions of refugees, returnees and internally displaced and stateless persons.

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees is seeking a Protection Associate under a temporary appointment to replace a staff member on maternity leave, to start immediately until 10 November 2017.

Main duties and responsibilities
• Monitor political, legal and other developments which impact on the protection environment (with a specific focus on family reunification, integration and children), report on them and when relevant, propose remedial measures.
• Contribute to and prepare legal interventions and comments on existing and draft legislation related to persons of concern, applying international, EU and national law and UNHCR policies and standards.
• Provide support and guidance to UNHCR’s new partner for family reunification.
• In collaboration with UNHCR’s new partner on family reunification, exchange information, support and follow-up on requests from UNHCR’s partners and lawyers on individual cases of family reunification.
• Ensure that the information campaign project on family reunification is finalized with all relevant tools (video/poster/leaflet) being developed, translated and disseminated through relevant channels.
• Develop and implement a one-day training for professionals working with unaccompanied children on trauma, including the promotion of UNHCR’s Handbook on trauma for teachers.
• Follow up on integration-related issues, including preparation of working group meetings and support to initiatives fostering employment opportunities for refugees.
• Assist in responding to queries from Government officials, NGOs, lawyers, individuals, etc. and provide the information directly or through appropriate referrals.
• Contribute to initiatives to capacitate relevant stakeholders (government officials, NGOs, lawyers etc.) e.g. by organizing and implementing seminars or training programs.
• Contribute to and prepare briefing notes and reports on issues of concern; draft correspondence.
• Provide inputs to the formulation of protection strategies and reporting.
• Participate in various NGOs working groups as relevant.
• Perform other duties as required.

Required qualifications
• Strong knowledge of refugee law, both international and domestic.
• Prior experience working in the field of refugee law.
• Fluency in English, French and Dutch.
• Computer literate.
